Sonoridades para o fim-de-semana: Club des Belugas
No início do Verão deste ano a minha secção de lounge e nujazz ficou mais enriquecida com a inclusão de um dos projectos mais ecléticos dentro destes géneros nestes ultimos anos.
Jazz, soul, ambient, lounge, electrónica tudo misturado para uns bons finais de tarde à beira-mar com um grupo de amigos... é assim o projecto Club des Belugas... a minha proposta para este fim-de-semana que se aproxima.

Tracks from CdB have been licensed for compilations more than 400 times. Tracks from CdB have been licensed for advertisement and TV commercials of: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Smart, KIA Motors, Jaguar, Nivea, C&A, Landrover, Burlington, Hudson, Strenesse, The German National Soccerteam, CPD, Telekom South Korea.

Sleepy Town Manufacture... IDM from Russia
Desde o início do fenómeno do aparecimento das netlabels que fiquei surpreendido com a capacidade criativa demonstrado por alguns dos projectos promovidos por estas editoras.
Dentro dos géneros que que entretanto foram "catalogando" as sonoridades que apareciam acabei por me inclinar para a IDM (intelligent dance music)... talvez por influência de algumas audições de u-zip e Amon Tobim nos finais dos anos 90.
Numa das netlabels que melhores projectos apresenta, a sutemos, descobri o projecto Sleepy Town Manufacture, originário da Rússia, que é actualmente uma das minhas companhias diária no meu velhinho hi-fi.

Sleepy Town Manufacture is among those Russian IDM projects that brought the Sound of Russian Electronica abroad.
For 8 years already Alexander Ananyev has been running this Project of sleepy town (his also known as Beautumn creator of wonderful ambient music). Sometimes Anton Lukoyanychev - another founder of STM - joins him, but it happens very occasionally lately. Alex has released 3 albums, more than ten virtual singles and featured all Sutemos compilations and now he present yet one more impressive part of his musical session - fourth album of Sleepy Town Manufacture Inspired By You.
When asked about it Alex answered: "Well, it's a nice album. We worked on it quite a lot and some tracks really took more time than they should have. But finally here it is. You'll also find some songs which is not a common thing for us and I hope it will not scare our listeners".
"I would love to give some credits for the people who appeared in those tracks: Inna Nega - she sings in three songs, Komnata, O Nei and Long Time No See. Lyrics and melody - it's all hers. She's beautiful and I really want to thank her. Alex Kozmidi - he is playing guitar in Papa Miles track. Actually, it is his composition which he's playing live in Germany pretty frequently. Evgeniy Gagarin - he sings in So Soft. I recorded this song three years ago, but lately decided that my voice is not good for it so I asked Evgeniy to sing this one" - Alex continued.

Lemongrass… downtempo em ambientes orquestrais e ambientais
Dentro do “género” downtempo existem diversas variações e tendências…
Mas, dentro destas várias tendências, há um projecto que salta à vista, quer pela sua qualidade sonora, quer pelo número de trabalhos editados, falo do projecto Lemongrass…
Bio
Roland Voss, aka Lemongrass, passou diversas fases musicais antes de encontrar o seu espaço como produtor de drum'n'bass e downtempo no final da década de 90.
Nascido na Alemanha, Voss começou por ter lições de bateria, tendo tocado até ao final da década de 70 com uma variedade de colectivos de funk e (na sua maioria) de jazz.
Quando os anos 80 chegaram, Voss interessa-se pelo fenómeno new wave, e a partir daqui começa a experimentar os meios electrónicos para as suas produções.
Durante a segunda metade dos 80's, Voss funda diversos projectos, na sua maioria ligados à música de dança e também um projecto punk chamado Klappstuhl.
Voss lança o seu primeiro álbum “Wuwei” em 1993, trabalho este influenciado pelo breakbeat e sob o pseudónimo Succa V, tendo depois começado a trabalhar com o baterista Torsten Kötter no projecto Jungle-Moon, que edita, em 1994, um trabalho influenciado pela onda jungle.
A sua primeira aparição com o nome Lemongrass acontece em 1997 com a edição de uma cover drum’n’bass do tema “Summertime” de Gershwin, na compilação “Submerged”, editada pela label alemã Incoming!.
O seu primeiro álbum “Drumatic Universe”, lançado em 1998, oferece-nos uma mistura das suas raízes jazz com batidas baseadas nas suas ultimas influências, o jungle e o trip-hop. A boa recepção do álbum, principalmente em França e graças ao seu som melancólico e atmosférico, consegue-lhe um contrato com a editora Mole Listening Pearls.
Após uma pequena paragem para se dedicar aos projectos paralelos Orbis e Pangaea, lança o seu segundo álbum, primeiro na Mole, denominado “Lumiére Obscure”, em 1999,trabalho este que recebe bastante atenção por parte da crítica, impulsionado pelo single de apresentação “Comme Toujours”, tema este que se tornou rapidamente num sucesso nos clubes nocturnos alemães.
Apesar de já apresentar uma grande evolução direccionada para atmosferas melódicas ligadas ao downtempo e ao downbeat, este trabalho reflecte ainda as influências da sua formação inicial em bateria, nomeadamente no recurso à utilização de batidas ainda um pouco rápidas para o género.
Na Primavera de 2000 assiste-se à edição do álbum “Voyage au Centre de la Terre” onde Voss desenvolve com mais consistência o seu estilo próprio de downtempo atmosférico baseado em ritmos de influência vincadamente drum’n’bass.
Este trabalho representa mais um passo no crescimento e na consolidação das sonoridades características de Lemongrass.
Sem tempo para reagir às críticas positivas e à crescente atenção a que passou a estar sujeito, Voss inicia a produção do seu quarto álbum, “Windows”, lançado em Fevereiro de 2001, e que surpreende o meio musical quer pela rapidez, quer quantidade, dos trabalhos produzidos… qualidades claramente opostas às batidas lentas e melodias melancólicas que Voss produz.
Logo após a edição de “Windows”, inicia-se na Primavera de 2001, o processo de criação do álbum “Solar Incense”, lançado em 2002 e cuja criação se baseou bastante na voz e na participação de Skadi, uma vocalista de Hamburgo, que trouxe uma nova dimensão às produções de Voss.
Infelizmente, este álbum apenas teve edição no Japão.
Em Março de 2003, sai o álbum “Skydiver”, outra excelente produção com influências atmosféricas baseadas no universo downbeat, trip-hop e drum’n’bass, já característico.
Este é um dos meus trabalhos favoritos desde projecto.
O álbum “Fleur Solaire”, editado em 2004, baseia-se nos mesmos elementos dos trabalhos anteriores (trip-hop e drum’n’bass) e que são a base de partida nas produções de Voss, acrescentando uma atmosfera lounge que nos transporta em sonhos ao que seria o verdadeiro mundo da musica.
Sem dúvida nenhuma o melhor álbum deste projecto e o atingir da maioridade de Voss na produção de ambientes atmosféricos de base electrónica.
No final de 2004, é lançado o álbum best of “Time Tunnel”, que resulta numa fantástica retrospectiva de toda a sua evolução como produtor de downtempo.
Ikebana: Arte tradicional Japonesa de arranjos florais e que requer dedicação, imaginação e amor pelo material de base. Tem como objectivo final a harmonia da forma, ritmo e cor.
Guiado por estes princípios Lemongrass edita, em 2005, o álbum “Ikebana” e este trabalho abre uma nova era na forma de expressão musical deste projecto tendo como base diversos elementos e estilos musicais, desde a pop e o disco da década de 70, passando pelo house e pelos breakbeats Franceses, até às baladas e aos ambientes orquestrais e ambientais, tudo isto pincelado por excelentes vocalizações de cantoras japonesas.
Uma derivação da sonoridade Lemongrass e uma possível indicação de um novo rumo a tomar.
Em 2006 e 2007, e cumprindo o ritmo de produção/edição de um álbum por ano, Voss edita um novo trabalho, de nome “Spa Sessions: Lounging” e "Filmotheque".
Recentemente Voss regressou com mais um album, de nome "Pour l'Amour".
Espero num próximo post poder comentar estes três ultimos albuns.
Para quem gosta das sonoridades downtempo penso que este projecto representa o que de melhor se tem feito nos últimos anos…

Welcome to the lounge experience as soundtracked by, Antwerp-based producer and DJ, Sven Van Hees (aka Ramon Serrano).
Bio
Born in May 1968, that truly remarkable month that was the apotheosis of the '60's when French students almost succeeded in toppling over an atrophied and authoritarian government, Van Hees cannot help but being a revolutionary and an innovator. But hey, this rebel comes in the guise of an emotive latin lover, flashing a seductive smile and sporting a thin moustache.
Starting out at the tender age of 15 when he hosted a jazz funk radio show for a local Antwerp station, Van Hees followed up with the popular Liaisons Dangereuses radio show, which ran for ten years.
On the strength of this outlet, he was invited to record for local labels like USA Import, Wonka and Atom/Elektron. When the track 'Oempa Loempa' by Aquastep (on Wonka Records) turned into one of Western-Europe's most popular club anthems of 1992, Belgian top-label R&S invited Van Hees to record for them.
'Piano Power' by Remy & Sven (a collaboration with Dutch DJ Remy Unger) kickstarted R&S subsidiary Global Custs and has achieved classic status.
Signing to Arcade/Trust Foundation in Holland in 1996, Van Hees released his debut album, "Svengali", that same year. It proved to be a multifarious affair of club grooves and lounge moods, highly original and quietly advanced. Two singles, 'Freakysthan' and 'Neighbours', both highly sought-after (but hard-to-find due to Trust folding upon the release of the latter track), attested to Van Hees' unique perception of dance culture.
When he released his "Gemini" album in the late summer of 1999, the burgeoning lounge scene could very well use a central focal point to help the nascent style crossover to its potential audience. And "Gemini" did exactly that. It thrilled its many buyers worldwide and woke the media up to the simple fact that there's life after clubbing.
"Gemini" melds light jazz and bossa nova influences with laid-back beats and a startling array of instruments to create a vibe perfect for a lazy day on the beach or a quiet evening at the local velvet-roped lounge.
Contradicting its name, "Tsunami (Inside My Soul)" features gently lapping waves over standup bass and a sultry horn riff. Even the wistful spoken thoughts, possibly stolen from a young film student's first short, can't poison this subliminal groove. "Flute Salad" and "Islamorada Fishing Company" would fit nicely into a Thievery Corporation or Kruder & Dorfmeister mix. "Serrano Anthem (Amor/Amor)" approaches erotica, as the interplay between various sounds seems to bring a woman to a sort of spiritual orgasm. Van Hees instills his music with longing and (sometimes overt) sexuality. To these ends, attempts to be lyrically deep or clever sometimes come off as merely amateurish. But this minor shortcoming should be quickly overlooked. Gemini is much more about mood than message, and the mood will carry the listener away.
"Calypso" is third album is the work of a subdued master. It's totally true to his nature and, although the album acknowledges '70s fusion icons like Quincy Jones and Lonnie Liston Smith, it creates a world completely its own - a singular dreamscape for all of us to wallow around in. Centered around the groove, "Calypso"'s eleven tracks take up the Sven Van Hees story were "Gemini" left it, creating a much-needed private space of leisure and introspection, of inner peace and enticing pleasure. It's like God's very own calypso band has sneaked out of heaven - for five minutes at least - and turned up in Antwerp, in Sven's sampler.
In the summer os 2005 he released his fourth album "Synesthesia" the most intimate view inside this producer's head so far. All eleven tracks have their own "colour", painting a complete picture of a near 64 minutes in audio.
It's also the first that includes guest performances and vocal tracks. Two tracks, the great summery housegrooves (or soulful house) and singles "The sun goes down" and "Eneas", were written and sung by Dutch vocalist/mc Lex Empress. Welcome to the lounge experience as soundtracked by, Antwerp-based producer and DJ, Sven Van Hees (aka Ramon Serrano).
Bio
Born in May 1968, that truly remarkable month that was the apotheosis of the '60's when French students almost succeeded in toppling over an atrophied and authoritarian government, Van Hees cannot help but being a revolutionary and an innovator. But hey, this rebel comes in the guise of an emotive latin lover, flashing a seductive smile and sporting a thin moustache.
Starting out at the tender age of 15 when he hosted a jazz funk radio show for a local Antwerp station, Van Hees followed up with the popular Liaisons Dangereuses radio show, which ran for ten years.
On the strength of this outlet, he was invited to record for local labels like USA Import, Wonka and Atom/Elektron. When the track 'Oempa Loempa' by Aquastep (on Wonka Records) turned into one of Western-Europe's most popular club anthems of 1992, Belgian top-label R&S invited Van Hees to record for them.
'Piano Power' by Remy & Sven (a collaboration with Dutch DJ Remy Unger) kickstarted R&S subsidiary Global Custs and has achieved classic status.
Signing to Arcade/Trust Foundation in Holland in 1996, Van Hees released his debut album, "Svengali", that same year. It proved to be a multifarious affair of club grooves and lounge moods, highly original and quietly advanced. Two singles, 'Freakysthan' and 'Neighbours', both highly sought-after (but hard-to-find due to Trust folding upon the release of the latter track), attested to Van Hees' unique perception of dance culture.
When he released his "Gemini" album in the late summer of 1999, the burgeoning lounge scene could very well use a central focal point to help the nascent style crossover to its potential audience. And "Gemini" did exactly that. It thrilled its many buyers worldwide and woke the media up to the simple fact that there's life after clubbing.
"Gemini" melds light jazz and bossa nova influences with laid-back beats and a startling array of instruments to create a vibe perfect for a lazy day on the beach or a quiet evening at the local velvet-roped lounge.
Contradicting its name, "Tsunami (Inside My Soul)" features gently lapping waves over standup bass and a sultry horn riff. Even the wistful spoken thoughts, possibly stolen from a young film student's first short, can't poison this subliminal groove. "Flute Salad" and "Islamorada Fishing Company" would fit nicely into a Thievery Corporation or Kruder & Dorfmeister mix. "Serrano Anthem (Amor/Amor)" approaches erotica, as the interplay between various sounds seems to bring a woman to a sort of spiritual orgasm. Van Hees instills his music with longing and (sometimes overt) sexuality. To these ends, attempts to be lyrically deep or clever sometimes come off as merely amateurish. But this minor shortcoming should be quickly overlooked. Gemini is much more about mood than message, and the mood will carry the listener away.
"Calypso" is third album is the work of a subdued master. It's totally true to his nature and, although the album acknowledges '70s fusion icons like Quincy Jones and Lonnie Liston Smith, it creates a world completely its own - a singular dreamscape for all of us to wallow around in. Centered around the groove, "Calypso"'s eleven tracks take up the Sven Van Hees story were "Gemini" left it, creating a much-needed private space of leisure and introspection, of inner peace and enticing pleasure. It's like God's very own calypso band has sneaked out of heaven - for five minutes at least - and turned up in Antwerp, in Sven's sampler.
In the summer os 2005 he released his fourth album "Synesthesia" the most intimate view inside this producer's head so far. All eleven tracks have their own "colour", painting a complete picture of a near 64 minutes in audio.
It's also the first that includes guest performances and vocal tracks. Two tracks, the great summery housegrooves (or soulful house) and singles "The sun goes down" and "Eneas", were written and sung by Dutch vocalist/mc Lex Empress.
